Our initiative began with what felt like a "chance" meeting between two people who live and breathe education.
Kia Karava is a sharp-minded researcher who works daily alongside future educators – understanding their mindset, their concerns, their world – while serving in roles that sit at the very heart of the country's education system. She sees the full picture of a worsening reality: not just in Greece, but across Europe and globally. The mass exodus of teachers from the profession. The growing unattractiveness of the job. Students in education programs quietly looking for a way out. An aging teacher workforce across the continent. It was while searching for ways to respond to all of this that she crossed paths – at an education forum – with EmpowerED's co-founder.
Effie Kyrikakis, with a background in Applied Psychology and more than thirty years inside education, meets the other side of the same reality every day: the people already in the classrooms, the schools, the leadership positions. Through her work in educator training, mentoring, and wellbeing, she has seen up close the exhaustion that hides behind dedication – the pressure behind professional competence – and the cost of a culture that asks educators to endlessly care for others without ever quite including them in that same equation. Searching for ways to bring scientific knowledge out of theory and into the daily life of schools – to make wellbeing a sustainable practice rather than yet another demand – she found Kia at that same forum. And somewhere in that conversation, two different perspectives on the same problem began to become one shared idea.
From that meeting, a dream was born. Simple in how it's stated. Deeply systemic in what it means: for the entire education ecosystem – educators, children, and families – to flourish together. Not another program asking teachers to become more "resilient" in the face of a difficult system. Not an isolated mental health intervention for students. But a culture shift – one that recognizes educators, students, leadership, and families as parts of the same living ecosystem. EmpowerED was created to bring these people closer together, to connect research with practice, to give real space to the real voices of the school community, and to turn wellbeing from a good intention into a different way of living, working, and learning together.
We didn't dream of a school without difficulties. We dreamed of a school where no one has to carry them alone.

Evdokia Karava is a Professor in the Language and Linguistics Division of the Department of English Language and Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She co-coordinates the Pedagogical and Teaching Competence Programme of the department and serves as academic lead for two fourth-year courses: Pedagogical Applications in the Teaching of English and Teaching Practice in English. She is also Deputy Director of the Research Centre for Language Teaching, Testing and Assessment (RCeL) at the same department.
IIn 2025, she co-founded the EmpowerED initiative alongside Effie Kyrikakis – beginning with a training programme for seventh-semester students preparing for their teaching placement, which was received with strong enthusiasm.
Effie Kyrikakis is the founder of MetaMathesis and NeuroLearningPower® (NLPower) – the evidence-based mentoring framework and training methodology that empowers and certifies educators in their expanded role as Educational Neurocoaches. Holding an MSc in Applied Psychology, a Master NLP Trainer-Coach certification, and recognised internationally as an educator trainer specialising in holistic wellbeing in education, she supports schools in embedding a culture of wellbeing and awareness at the level of the entire school community. She has already empowered more than 3,500 educators – and through them, their students – to flourish, through European programmes, university training, and conference presentations.
With this vision, she co-created the EmpowerED initiative together with Dr Evdokia Karava, Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at NKUA, so that whole-school community wellbeing can reach every educator and every student in Greece.
